Matt Harvey: Will be designated for assignment

"I think there are a lot of issues that come with him and his experience in NY, that perhaps a change of scenery will help", Alderson concluded.

Things have not gone well for New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey in 2018.

At the same time, Harvey came under scrutiny for occasional off-the-field distractions and excess partying. He underwent Tommy John surgery late in 2013, costing him the entire 2014 season. He was voted National League Comeback Player of the Year.

Mental makeup issues will dominate the Matt Harvey story, but poor health led him where he is today. He returned in 2017, but has been a shell of his former self since the surgery. The Mets made a very different decision. He took two no-hitters into the seventh inning (April 13, June 18) and was ideal through 6 2/3 innings against the White Sox while pitching with a nosebleed. His most recent innings have been especially bad, and from the bullpen - a benchmark moment on Harvey's sad timeline.

"Whether it's mechanical, whether it's physical, whether it's mental, whatever the case may be - seeing him, playing against him, playing with him, you know that the talent is in there and the ability is in there and you hope that he can kind of get back on track".

Iowa lawmakers pass "heartbeat bill"
However, amendments passed loosened the bill's abortion restrictions, allowing the bill to garner extra votes it needed to pass. Republican Governor Kim Reynolds, who is anti-abortion, has yet to publicly state if she will sign into the law or not.

Harvey has a 6.77 ERA in 119 2/3 innings combined between this year and last.

Harvey is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in four starts and four relief appearances, leaving him with a 34-37 record and 3.66 ERA in six major league seasons. Booed as he walked off the mound, Harvey took a seat in the dugout and stared at Citi Field. Just last week, Harvey was seen at a Los Angeles club the evening before he pitched in a game in San Diego. He's already been demoted from the starting rotation. "I guess the short answer is no".

Now, Harvey has been designated for assignment.

If this was a decade or two ago under George Steinbrenner, it would seem nearly inevitable Harvey would end up with the Yankees after being designated for assignment by the Mets on Friday, following the paths of Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, but it's not quite such a natural fit with the current team.

After receiving the news, Harvey declined an assignment to the minor leagues.
