The first Free Comic Book Day was held in 2002.

He says he was on a mission to find new comics for his collection.

Free Comic Book Day is an annual worldwide event run by the comic book industry, which sees stores hold events while inviting visitors to pick up a selection of special free comics.

Haaland said his store will have about 50 different free comic books to hand out to visitors - which includes a variety of comics that range from Batman to Power Rangers, and also include kid specific books, as well.

"[Field] thought the best way to get people interested in comics is by reading comics", Price said.

This is primarily an initiative to win over new readers, that's why most of the FCBD titles are essentially extended previews of comics coming later this year.

Not surprisingly, it's the busiest day of the year for the store.

"We'll have Deadpool giving away free coffee across the street at Bespoke, and Wake N Bake Donuts when we open (at 10 a.m.), and free Boombalatti's ice cream at 1 o'clock", Motsinger said.

Ariel Carmona Jr/The Willits News Retailers gave out more than 50 titles from various publishers Saturday at specialty stores all over Mendocino County as part of the 16th annual Free Comic Book Day event on Saturday May 5.

"It gives people an opportunity to be exposed to something they wouldn't normally pick up in comics", Wizards Asylum owner Bryan Alcorn said. Comic book lovers both young and old will enjoy this walk through comic book history. Comic Book Realm offers yet another simple model that may be worth trying as well.

While there are free comics available, it's considered polite to buy something as the shop still has to pay for the shipment of comics. Die-hard comic fans are counting down to the day too, since many important storylines will be revealed in special comics released on Saturday.
