Australian scientist David Goodall, 104, takes own life in assisted death

The lauded London-born ecologist and botanist, who was not terminally ill, said the decision had been driven by his deteriorating quality of life.

Goodall was an honorary research associate at Perth's Edith Cowan University, and had produced dozens of research works.

"I've no difficulty at all with people opposing it, people are entitled to live their life the way they wish providing that living that life that way doesn't interfere with anybody else's ability to live their life the way they want. And I'm very happy to end it", Goodall said Thursday in the room where he died shortly after.

Present at the death of the acclaimed professor, Nitschke said that the 104-year-old scientist passed away at the exact time the song ended.

The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg permit euthanasia and assisted suicide.

The laws differ for euthanasia, in which a doctor actively administers a lethal drug, than for assisted suicide, which require the participants to take a type of active measure, like taking pills themselves.

In the US, seven states allows physician-assisted suicide - California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington according to Huffington Post.com.

Sky's Michelle Clifford said police and coroner officials would now need to visit the clinic to make sure the assisted suicide was carried out properly.

"Any person who for selfish motives incites or assists another to commit or attempt to commit suicide is, if that other person thereafter commits or attempts to commit suicide, liable to a custodial sentence not exceeding five years or to a monetary penalty".

The day before his death, Dr Goodall attended a press conference sporting a jumper bearing the words "Ageing disgracefully".

The US states of Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, California, Colorado and Hawaii permit assisted dying for terminally ill patients.

"On behalf of the entire ECU community, I extend my sincerest condolences to his family during this time", Professor Omari said.

I'm content to leave them undone, he added.

Goodall said he hoped his story would lead to the legalization of assisted dying in other countries.

"The procedure for dying can be rather unpleasant, however nevertheless, it shouldn't be" he said.

Before his death, Goodall said there were things he would have changed, had he to do it all over again.

Dr Goodall told reporters on Wednesday: One should be free to choose the death, when death is at an appropriate time.
