India stands shoulder to shoulder with Nepal: PM Modi

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Modi said India and Nepal will work towards building "Ramayan" circuit between both the countries.

Modi will today also formally launch Nepal's biggest hydroelectric project, being built by an Indian company, as he seeks to regain ground in the Himalayan republic where China has made deep inroads.

Addressing the people in Nepal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "I am glad to be here in Janakpur".

Modi landed in the southern city of Janakpur where he will offer prayers at a famed Hindu temple.

Earlier, Defence Minister Ishwar Pokhrel and Province 2 Chief Minister Lalbabu Raut received Mr. Modi at the airport.

The Prime Minister arrived in Kathmandu after attending the civic reception in the ancient and religious city of Janakpur. The Prime Minister also congratulated the mayor and people of Nepal for initiating cleanliness drive across the country.

In a statement Modi said the visit was part of his government's "neighbourhood first" policy and "reflects the high priority, India, and personally I, attach to our age-old, close and friendly ties with Nepal".
