The sheriff's office said one person, a student at the school, has been detained.

"We are incredibly grateful for the actions of Highland High School teachers and staff and our first responders who courageously protected the lives of our students today", Brett Neal, an assistant superintendent for the school district, said in a statement.

California authorities arrested one 14-year-old suspect after reports of gunshots at a high school in Palmdale, according to media reports.

Deputies reported to the elementary school but found no victims and no sign of a shooter, Nishida said.

Dozens of officers with several agencies blanketed both campuses looking for possible shooters and victims. The school is on lockdown, students were told to shelter in place and parents were told to stay away from the area.

Sheriff's deputies also received a call reporting shots fired in the vicinity of Manzanita Elementary School about 7 miles (11 kilometers) away from Highland High School.

The suspect in custody is 14 years old, as is the victim, according to law enforcement officials. "We feel very confident that our schools our safe".
