The assailant who killed a 29-year-old man in a central on Saturday night was born in 1997 in the region of Russian Federation, a judicial source said on Sunday.

Born in Chechnya, a part of Russia, Azimov became a French citizen in 2010, ABC News reported. "He was registered in the database of Paris police among persons with propensity for radical actions in 2016", Griveaux told the RTL radio station on Sunday.

President Macron faced calls to detain suspected Islamists even if they have a clean criminal record after a man was killed in a random knife attack by an Islamic State jihadist in Paris.

The killer had shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("Allah is the greatest") when attacking passers-by with a knife.

The media wing of ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement published online.

Two of the victims were gravely wounded and two others were lightly injured, police said.

The French interior minister is holding a special security meeting Sunday to address the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State group.

The attacker's mother and father are in police custody for questioning.

The attack was one of a succession in France in which more than 240 people have died since January 2015, keeping the country on high alert. "Police intervened immediately", Pierre Gaudin, a senior official at the Paris prefecture, said.

The Islamic State group said one of its "soldiers" had carried out the Paris attack, according to the SITE monitoring organisation, but provided no evidence to back their claim.

Police identified the assailant as Khamzat A., who grew up with his family in Strasbourg, eastern France, a source close to the inquiry told AFP.

Police union representative Rocco Contento told Reuters that the assailant, after attacking bystanders with a knife, rushed at police shouting "I will kill you, I will kill you!" Chechens have been among the numerous foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq, some joining the Islamic State cause early in the fighting. Several witnesses said the attacker ran directly toward police.

"I was working in the restaurant and suddenly I heard a woman screaming ... he came and attacked her", Jonathan, a witness working nearby who wouldn't provide his last name, recalled.

The stabbing is the latest in a series of Islamist-inspired terror attacks in France in recent years.
