The rugby league-loving community have shared numerous tributes to Cameron Smith following news of his retirement from representative football.

"Not too many people understand the commitment that you need to play Origin".

He hopes avoiding tours and extra duties will help him attend more family events with his wife and three children while also resting more. Past year the series had an effect on me more physically and mentally than ever before. "I don't know, maybe the length of that season of being away for three Origin games and then a six-week period with the Kangaroos sort of confirmed to me that it was getting more hard for me to be away from my wife and children". "I've been away from you for a long time but you've always wanted me to pursue my dreams".

At 34 years of age, Smith led Melbourne to a second premiership following a memorable comeback series win, later taking his country to glory in a jam-packed season.

The skipper is set to front the media today to make an announcement regarding his rep future, however Fox Sports' James Hooper has said that the decision to hang up the boots will be effective immediately for all rep footy.

"I take my hat off to you mate", Walters said.

Smith recalled returning home from last year's Origin series in a state of exhaustion as the toughness and brutality of Origin took a toll on him both on and off the field.

"I thought his performance in Game III of past year was one of the best I have seen from anyone at that level and at age 34 that speaks volumes", he said. "It's a massive blow", Walters said.

Smith's decision is likely to springboard Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough into contention for a Queensland debut, while Jake Granville of the Cowboys could be another option.

"We'll get to that in the next couple of weeks", Walters said.

After making his debut for Queensland in 2003, Smith played a record 42 Origins for the Maroons and was captain of the side since 2012.

As a stalwart of the Maroons, Smith oversaw the greatest period of dominance ever seen in the series, with Queensland winning 11 out of the past 12 series. Queensland lengthened from $2.15 to $2.50.

With North Queensland languishing near the bottom of the NRL ladder, prop Scott has been indifferent form.

The Broncos (5-5), Cowboys (3-7) and Titans (3-7) have all underperformed this season and Queenslanders were looking for their Origin outfit to lift their spirits.
