Atletico Madrid lifted the Europa League trophy with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Olympique de Marseille at the Parc Lyon on Wednesday night.

And the Frenchman doubled Atletico's lead just after half-time, cutely lifting the ball over the goalkeeper as Diego Simeone's men took control.

The French side looked even more lost when Payet went off and Griezmann's supremely well-taken second goal effectively finished them off.

But if this season is to be his last with the club, Griezmann produced the flawless parting gift at the Groupama Stadium.

"I never gave him anything, he's the only player here who won the World Cup but he has had to work for everything and he leaves a very good legacy for other players to learn from".

Diego Simeone, the Atletico head coach, watched on from the stands having been given a four-game ban after being sent off during the semi-final first-leg against Arsenal but still saw his side ease to victory.

"This was just confirmation of what Griezmann has been doing year after year", said the Argentine. "We hope he's happy and. with us".

With the winners being guaranteed entry into next season's Champions League, the reputation of the Europa League has significantly improved in recent years.

"On a personal level he will feel so much pride, so much excitement after making a dream he had searched for so long a reality", Simeone said.

Marseille had been thoroughly beaten and could only salute their fervent supporters, who outnumbered the Spanish fans in the 59,000-capacity Groupama Stadium and let off flares and firecrackers at the start and end of the game.

The game carried on regardless, with Rudi Garcia's side well beaten.

"We had the best chance first up and then we made a mistake that cost us a goal".

"The scoreline is harsh but the better team won".

Only around 11,500 Marseille fans will officially be in attendance in a crowd of close to 60,000 and those without tickets have been urged not to travel amid fears of trouble between them and fans of Lyon. "Given what they've done in the past, they are a great club and they are playing in a major final".

But his Atletico team-mates are confident the 27-year-old is fully focused on leading his side to what would be their third Europa League title since the start of the decade.

A calamitous touch from Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa allowed Gabi to play the ball through for Griezmann, who slotted a simple finish beyond Steve Mandanda. The Cameroonian's attempt at a touch was bad, and Gabi pounced on the loose ball, sending Griezmann through to finish.

Marseille pressed high from the start, and nearly broke the deadlock just on four minutes on their "home" pitch.

A slick throughball from Koke and Griezmann was in to loft the ball over Mandanda with an ease of a forward who knew he was superior to everybody else on the pitch.

From there, the result was rarely in doubt - and the icing was put well and truly on the cake when captain Gabi drove home a rare goal from a low shot to make it 3-0 in the dying minutes.
