"These last 48 hours have been trying", Boulton said in a statement released Thursday morning announcing the suspension of his campaign.

The unnamed woman shared a similar account to that of Millage, according to The Des Moines Register.

Responding to the allegations is an "embarrassing conversation for me to have today", but can serve as lesson to others, Boulton said in his statement.

In a statement from his office issued on the morning of May 24, Boulton stressed the importance of electing a Democrat to be Iowa's next governor and said he will back the nominee, who could be selected by voters in the June 5 primary.

Boulton did not appear at a candidate forum Wednesday evening at Lake Darling in Brighton, although his campaign earlier said he planned to be there.

In a statement issued to his supporters Thursday morning, he thanked his campaign staff and supporters for helping him in his quest to win the nod to face Gov. Kim Reynolds in the November 6 election.

Boulton did not say whether he would seek to return to the Iowa Senate, where he now is serving his first term. "But I am not going to offer any additional context to this, other than to say if someone's perspective is that it was inappropriate and I crossed a line and I misread a situation in a social setting, I do apologize".

Janet Petersen, the Des Moines minority leader in the Iowa Senate who endorsed Boulton's candidacy, called the allegations "a serious matter".

One of Boulton's primary opponents, Cathy Glasson, released a statement following the allegations. "Nate Boulton's behavior disqualifies him from leading our state government".

"Let me be very clear, there is no place for sexual misconduct or harassment in politics or anywhere else. My heart goes out to the women who endured this behavior and I applaud their bravery in coming forward, and every woman who has come forward in the Me Too movement before them".

Iowa Republicans also called for Boulton to quit the race and resign as a senator.

Norris noted that he had been confirmed by the U.S. Senate twice after full FBI background investigations. "That means making sure we have the wage growth we need, that we have the quality of life for workers in this state, so that they want to stay here, so that our youngest-our best and brightest-stay in our communities across Iowa, and that we can recruit the next generation of skilled workers that we need".

Reynolds says she fired Jamison immediately after learning about the allegations, but Democrats criticized that she kept general details of the allegations secret for more than a month.
