"It's free to the public and we would like to get everyone involved", said Minot Relay for Life member Heidi Llewellyn.

"I have stage three breast cancer, and I have been battling this for 10 months-we've been battling this for 10 months", said Sarah.

The event is a celebration of the year-long efforts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

"This is event is very important to the people that have been touched by cancer and to the community as well", event co-lead Michelle Robinson said.

But many do not know that 96 percent of the ACS's funds come from special events like Relay for Life, personal and corporate sponsorship donations.

Relay For Life also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer, Lockett said. It's going to be a very emotional relay this year ... because of everything that is going on with my family.

Past year alone, the lodge has hosted 32 patients and guests from the county, whom stayed 218 nights total.

Those who've battled the disease say "hope" is what sustained them through their journey.

"I could have either stuck my head in the ground and had a pity party, but I rallied and I'm like I'm not going down". "Today we will hear wonderful stories of strength, courage and hope, and this entire relay runs on hope". The money is great; it goes toward research but this is a lot more than just the money for people who volunteer.

"I was exhausted, but I was also caring for my two young granddaughters and thought, 'Now I know why you don't have children when you are 46, '" she recalled. "If they haven't registered yet we would encourage them to register as a team, as a participant, as a survivor".

"Putting together an event like this is not easy; it takes about a year of planning", said McMurter. During the Fight Back Ceremony, each participated was reminded of their commitment to helping their community fight cancer which brought them to the relay.

Jackson, a cancer survivor who works at the Cancer Center in Peru, said she witnesses the effects of the disease every day at her job. Since then, the combined volunteer teams have organized their annual fundraiser for cancer research at the West Warwick location, a central spot for all Kent County participants.
