‘Avengers: Infinity War’ crosses $2 billion at the box office

Avengers: Infinity War has become the fourth film to earn at least $2 billion globally, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, and Avatar. It holds the record for biggest domestic debut ever with $257.7 million in its opening weekend. (Avatar remains the all-time global champ, with $2.79 billion in grosses.) What sets Infinity War apart, however, is the fact it was released in April, giving an early jump-start to the summer movie season. "Infinity War" nabbed a record $640 million global opening and reached the $1 billion mark in a record 11 days.

Disney announced Tuesday that Infinity War reached the milestone in its 48th day of release, with a domestic total of $656.1 million and an worldwide total of $1.35 billion.

Internationally, Infinity War is the third highest grossing release ever with $1.346B. The film opened to a massive $199.3M in China two weeks after the global debut and has gone on to become the third biggest release ever in the country with $369.7M to date. Infinity War cost up to $450,000 to produce, and went over budget, but it's now marked a major milestone that only three movies before it have reached.

In theaters now, Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin.

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos.

The currently-untitled Avengers 4 features a cast made up of numerous key players in Infinity War - alongside newcomers like Brie Larson and Evangeline Lilly - and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
