Romania's Simona Halep returns the ball to Spain's Garbine Muguruza during their women's singles semi-final match on day twelve of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open tennis tournament in Paris on June 7, 2018.

Nadal is only the third male player in the Open era to reach 11 semifinals at a single Grand Slam, alongside Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors.

World number 72 Cecchinato stunned Roland Garros on Tuesday by following up his surprise wins over top-10 seeds David Goffin and Pablo Carreno Busta with a breathtaking victory against 12-time major champion Djokovic.

Juan Martin del Potro is back in the French Open semifinals for the first time since 2009 and will next face Rafael Nadal, the man with the most appearances at this stage of the clay-court Grand Slam. So there are not 10 more chances to keep playing here. So there was mild concern when Nadal called for the trainer midway through a game, requiring treatment on what looked like cramp in his hand.

Cecchinato, who up until this year's Roland Garros never got past the first round of a Grand Slam event, did not look the same in the third set, as he hit just one victor, committing eight unforced errors. No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro beat No. 3 Marin Cilic 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Serving to stay in the match at 4-5, the Austrian allowed mistakes to creep into his game.

"He's too strong. He's improving his backhand a lot".

- "He is fresh, healthy". When play resumed on Thursday, however, Nadal returned to his dominance at Roland-Garros. Nadal racked up 18 winners in the fourth set to capture the match, ultimately overpowering Schwartzman.

But as the Spaniard struggled to win points on his first serve, he was broken again for 5-4 and Schwartzman served for the set. It gave Nadal a break point he converted when Schwartzman sailed a forehand long.

This included a quarter-final success in Madrid last month.

The tournament is unlikely to make up much ground on its rival Slams in the coming years as its organisers, the French Tennis Federation (FFT), focus on financing a modernisation project which includes a new centre court with a retractable roof.

For Toni Nadal, who stopped coaching his nephew at the end of last season, the experience wasn't that different.

"But I have a plan".

Since they exchanged breaks of serve in the second and third games, both have held serve, with Nadal now ahead 5-4, with Thiem serving next.

The No. 7-seeded Thiem, a 24-year-old from Austria, is appearing in his first Grand Slam final.

The 16th-seeded Gauff, who is 14 years old, beat 15th-seeded Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada 6-4, 6-3.

"I have never entered a court just to enjoy the match".

Nadal was far from his usual impeccable self on red clay, too.

"It's a challenge that every player wants to have", he said. After guzzling water during that break, Nadal felt better and was back to playing his unmistakable brand of almost unbeatable clay-court tennis.
