Tesla’s Autopilot will get ‘full self-driving features’ in August

Looking through the recorded performance data, the autopilot system was engaged on four separate occasions during the 32-minute trip, including a continuous operation for the last 18 minutes 55 seconds prior to the crash.

Musk said that issue would be addressed in the most current Autopilot update and "fully fixed" in the August update. "With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features".

While the company has repeatedly pointed to human error in these cases, the "Autopilot" branding has left some drivers confused about the capabilities of the software, which is still now more of an "assist" feature than a a fully autonomous driver/navigator. Tesla did not immediately respond when asked if those features would be included in the August update.

Tesla's documentation on its website about the "full self-driving capabilities" package says that it is not possible to know exactly when each element of the functionality will be available, as this is highly dependent on local regulatory approval.

In another fatal accident past year, Tesla's Autopilot failed to detect a truck crossing the road, but investigators pointed out the driver was watching a movie at the time and not paying attention with the semi-autonomous system in operation.

Elon Musk plans to equip a new version of the Tesla Roadster with "around 10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around vehicle", he said in a tweet, adding that this arrangement will substantially improve the car's acceleration, allow it to achieve higher top speed, and also improve braking and cornering.

Shares of Tesla (TSLA) rose as much as 5 percent on Monday after the news.

GM had said it will expand the roll-out of Super Cruise to all its Cadillac models beginning 2020.
