Fred has the power and tenacity to form a solid double-pivot with Nemanja Matic when Jose Mourinho sees the need to manage the game, but it would be simplistic to describe him as a holding midfielder.

United have already started the summer busy, after completing a deal for Diogo Dalot from Porto and also coming close to announcing the transfer of Brazil worldwide Fred.

This past season saw United finish with a Premier League points tally that would have delighted supporters with Sir Alex Ferguson in charge, but rivals Manchester City still won the title fairly easily.

According to Manchester Evening News, the former Chelsea manager wants to sign a new left-back, centre-back and back-up striker.

However, Mourinho won't stop there as he desperately needs to bring in a top class centre-back to act as a long-term partner for Eric Bailly with the future's of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in doubt.

The former Real Madrid manager is understood to be keen on wrapping up any transfer deals ahead of the highly anticipated competition due to how hard it is to sign players when matches begin.

United are thought to value Alderweireld at around £50m - some £20m below Tottenham's asking price - but could now prioritise other targets in their bid to bolster their defensive options.

Varane has always been linked with a move to Old Trafford and Mourinho is a known fan of the French international's as he was the man in charge when Madrid signed him from Lens in 2011 so a reunion could be on the cards if United could agree a fee with Madrid.
