"The United States and Canada are in a fight, obviously". "He informed with absolute certainty and firmness as tension over steel and aluminium duties continue to portend to a full-blown global trade war, "I don't want to hurt American workers, they are our neighbours and our friends", adding, "[however] My job is to stand for Canadian workers, Canadian interests and I will do that, without flinching". He vented his sentiments on Twitter just minutes after Trudeau's announcement with a scathing invective calling his host "very dishonest & weak". That came after months of threatening, and then imposing sanctions on America's top trading partners, like Canada.

"At this hard moment in our history with our US neighbors, Canadians need to know that all sides of this House stand united as one", Ms. Ramsey said Monday. As we show in the graphic below, Canada is by far the hardest-hit by the tariffs, with over $12 billion of annual exports targeted. Canada and Mexico are also taking action.

Ries says it could take a while for Canadian consumers to suffer.

"We have states that depend on Canada as their largest export market - over 30 states in fact".

All lawmakers gave a standing ovation for the government's response to the Trump administration's verbal attacks on Trudeau.

"This is a small-minded man not fit for public office. We will act too", Merkel said.

But even conservative and populist figures on the right of Canadian politics, some of them admirers of Trump's brand of politics when it stays south of the border, rallied to their liberal premier.

Canada's House of Commons Monday condemned the personal attacks on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by U.S. President Donald Trump and his surrogates.

"But the conclusion I draw is that it is only through continued dialogue that we can find ways to work together to resolve the challenges we face".

Behind his claim lies a difference in how the countries' calculate the trade figures.

"It would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us", said Trudeau.

In the end, Trump did attend the summit, along with his counterparts from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

He cited "a $800 Billion Trade Deficit" for the US, a number he's touted several times. "We would hope that the United States would similarly honour the commitments that they have made".

"It is at the very early stages, there has been no conclusion but that is an issue which the prime minister raised very clearly with the president in the bilateral meeting on Friday".
