The framing that he went into the summit as an equal and from a position of strength is crucial within North Korea, after enduring years of tough sanctions while it pursued its nuclear ambitions.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived at Osan Air Base south of Seoul from Singapore early Wednesday evening.

Also, the USA forces stationed at South Korea admitted that Department of Defense or the Indo-Pacific Command had given them "no updated guidance on the execution or cessation of training exercises" and hence will continue to coordinate with their Seoul counterparts and maintain their current positions until further notice. But South Korean President Moon Jae-in played a key role in opening the dialogue and getting things back on track after Trump cancelled the meeting last month.

US President Donald Trump has declared North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat, even though there is no clearer definition of denuclearisation or a timeframe added for it to be done. The details of how and when the North would denuclearize appear yet to be determined, as are the nature of the unspecified "protections" Trump is pledging to Kim and his government.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterized by bloodshed and threats.

"Trump, the leader of the whole world, acknowledging that Kim Jong Un is a smart and talented guy, is like stabbing the heart of the North Korean residents", said Kim Yong-hwa, who is also an activist with the North Korean Refugees Human Rights Association of Korea.

Trump on Tuesday pledged to suspend the US and South Korea's "war games", or military drills.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said it is ready to verify a deal, although it focuses on monitoring nuclear materials and sites rather than disarmament.

China has repeatedly called for a "freeze-for-freeze" or "dual suspension" initiative, in North Korea suspends its nuclear program in exchange for the USA and South Korea to suspend their joint military exercises in the region.

But there was no mentioning the previous US aim of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization".

In Singapore, the North Korean leader again committed to "complete denuclearization", and the two countries promised to "join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime" on the peninsula. Jung said Trump led the group to believe that he would confront the leadership in Pyongyang about the widespread abuses in the country.

About 29,000 USA soldiers are based in the South, under a security agreement reached after the war ended in 1953.

There are usually two sets of exercises every year, in spring and autumn, involving a massive number of troops and military hardware.

The Pentagon said on Tuesday that it was consulting with the White House and others, but was silent on whether the August exercise would proceed.

"We will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money", Trump told reporters, adding that "at some point" he wanted to withdraw USA troops from the South.

The South Korean president responded positively to the summit, praising the "courage and determination" of both leaders.

Trump's comment on suspending joint exercises with Seoul have caught South Korea's Defense Ministry and USA forces in Korea off guard. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.
