Post mortem due in Co Cork murder investigation

A man has been killed after armed thugs broke into his home in the middle of the night and battered him and his partner.

Another woman, aged in her 30s, was also in the bungalow at the time of the attack and escaped through a window. The injured parties were later taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or for anyone with information to contact them at Gurranabraher on 021 494 6200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Forensics officers are now examining the property and where the auto was found.

Police said Wilk died in the hospital, despite the efforts of all medical teams involved.

Mr Wilk was a Polish national who had settled with his partner, Elzbieta, at Maglin on the outskirts of Ballincollig. They believe the auto was a BMW 3 series.

The couple's home now remains sealed off in order for a forensic examination to take place.

A auto was found burned out a number of kilometres away in Waterfall.

Gardaí found a firearm, possibly a handgun, and two machetes in a burnt-out vehicle that was used by the gang. They are also anxious to interview anyone who spotted anything unusual or suspicious in those areas during the last three days.

A fundraising page has been opened to help the family following the attack and murder of Wilk.

The Polish man, named as Mikołaj Wilk, ran a gardening business and had lived in Ireland for at least five years.
