After considering separate bids for the 2026 World Cup, the federations that govern soccer in Mexico, Canada and the United States chose to launch a cooperative effort to host the tournament in April 2017.

The three countries presented a "United Bid" that promised to take football to a combined 500million people in North America and were awarded 134 votes to Morocco's 65.

"We are very excited and humbled that the FIFA member associations have entrusted the Concacaf region with the honour of hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in its new extended format", CONCACAF said in a statement.

"Football today is the only victor", said U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first tournament played in the expanded 48-team format, up from the current 32 countries.

Both Mexico (1970 and 1986) and the United States (1994) have previously hosted World Cups.

While the US and Mexico have become World Cup mainstays throughout the tournament's past, this is particularly pertinent for Canada - who has appeared in just one World Cup (1986).

They warned "the amount of new infrastructure required for the Morocco 2026 bid to become reality can not be overstated". The final list will come from the 23 candidate cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States that were included as part of the bid.

Officials have already talked of staging three games, one in each of the three countries, to kick off the tournament.

The "United Bid" calls for the U.S.to host 60 matches, including all games from the quarter-finals through to the final.

The tournament will mark the first time a World Cup has been shared by three host nations. "I've done a lot in my career, and opening the FIFA World Cup to 80,000 football fans in the stadium and many millions all over the world is a boyhood dream". Antonio Carbajal and German legend Lothar Matthaus achieved the feat, while Gigi Buffon went to five World Cups but didn't make an appearance at France 1998.

At the beginning of this week, 871,797 tickets had been sold to fans in Russian Federation, but 88,825 ticket sales have been recorded in the US since they became available to buy last September.

"We believe strongly that this decision will be made on its merits", Cordeiro, the bid leader, told reporters.

While Morocco had some key factors in its favour - its much more friendly time-zone for the key TV markets of Europe, its footballing culture and potential tournament legacy - on infrastructural and financial fronts, the United bid blew it out of the water.
