In a surprise Twitter post less than three hours before polls closed, Trump criticized Sanford for his lack of support and took a swipe at his affair.

Rep. Mark Sanford, the Republican incumbent in SC, lost his primary on Tuesday-and a well-timed tweet from President Donald Trump may be responsible for his defeat.

Trump tweets Wednesday that his advisers didn't want him to get involved in the Republican primary, thinking Rep. Mark Sanford "would easily win". In South Carolina voters rejected incumbent Congressman Mark Sanford, who was attacked for being insufficiently loyal to Trump. "He is better off in Argentina".

With 99 percent of the state's precincts reporting, state Rep. Katie Arrington had 50.5 percent with 32,441 votes to Sanford's 46.5 percent with 29,899 votes.

While Sanford's defiance of Trump cost him, Virginia congresswoman Barbara Comstock handily won her primary against a more conservative candidate who accused her of being a "Never Trumper". But as Sanford spoke, the race was still too close to call.

Voters also cast ballots in Maine, Nevada and North Dakota, as the field for the mid-term elections begins to take shape.

Trump made a last-minute endorsement against Sanford on Tuesday. "Adam is smart, works hard, and knows how to win".

Rematches: In 2014, Nevada politics watchers were shocked when Democratic congressman Steven Horsford, a rising political star, lost his outer Las Vegas area district to an unpolished newcomer, Republican Cresent Hardy. He'll face Senator Tim Kaine, the Democratic incumbent.

Runoff for SC GOP gubernatorial race; Rep. Smith wins Dem primary

Democrats in Wisconsin: Democrats at the state legislative level continue to win improbable races.

In Nevada, the parties will choose their nominees in two competitive open seats.

In the Second Congressional District, incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Taylor will face the victor of the Democratic primary between former U.S. Navy commander Elaine Luria and schoolteacher Karen Mallard.

Also on Tuesday, voters nominated challengers to two of this year's most vulnerable Senate incumbents.

Corey Stewart, the bombastic conservative who built his public image on championing the Confederate flag and monuments like Charlottesville's Robert E. Lee statue and has appeared with white nationalists, won the Republican Senate nomination. He says he plans a "vicious" general election campaign against Kaine, who battled Trump as Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential candidate and has a huge fundraising advantage.

As expected, North Dakota Republicans chose Rep. Kevin Cramer to challenge Democratic Sen.

McMaster received the most votes of the four Republicans running, but will face Greenville businessman John Warren in a second contest June 26.

Democrats, meanwhile, could nominate state Rep. Jason Smith, a Joe Biden ally, to take on the Republican victor there. "Primary voters in the Republican Party have devolved into a Trumpist cult".
