As Seoul sought clarification on the USA position towards its long-standing ally, U.S. secretary of State Mike Pompeo was travelling to South Korea to brief President Moon.

President Donald Trump's ideas about stopping the joint military exercises between the United States military and South Korea may have come from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The wording recalls Seoul's reaction to Trump's initial cancellation of the summit with Kim two weeks ago, after North Korean officials lobbed personal insults at National Security Adviser John Bolton and Vice President Mike Pence. The two signed a four-point joint statement.

Mr Trump said he had formed a "special bond" with Mr Kim, who said he and Mr Trump had "decided to leave the past behind".

Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end.

Trump also announced on Tuesday that the USA would cease its joint military drills with South Korea - an apparent concession to Pyongyang, which has repeatedly claimed that the drills are merely a pretext for a strike on the North.

Seoul's reaction to the end of joint military exercises echoes the reaction of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), the Pentagon's organizational structure in the country.

"We've adhered to the position of considering [the halt] during the process of dialogue even in the past", he added, asking the outlets to refer to a previous statement from the Blue House.

"A great shift in world history is in the making", one Internet user said in a comment response to a news story.

"Less than 24 hours and already there are two versions of what happened", said CNBC reporter Christina Wilkie.

The ROK President said Seoul will support Pyongyang along the path to peace, vowing to "spare no effort in cooperating" with concerned parties "to ensure that the agreement can be implemented in its entirety".
