The United States, Canada, and Mexico have won out over Morocco in a joint bid to host FIFA's 2026 World Cup, reports Sports Illustrated. Citing a number of high-profile sponsors dropping FIFA, London newspaper The Independent reported that FIFA's 2018 World Cup sponsorship revenues were down $240 million.

Speaking on Trump's possible visit for the World Cup, Peskov said "for this there is even no need for North America to win".

Moroccan officials, who have stressed throughout their campaign how snatching the tournament from under the noses of the North American favourites will transform the landscape of their country, remain quietly confident they can upset the odds.

"Each of the United Bid's 23 proposed stadiums are fully built, occupied, and operational, ensuring long-term use following the 2026 World Cup". With a handful of games in Mexico and Canada but the majority in the USA, the 2026 bid promises the richest and most lucrative tournament in the history of global soccer.

Three countries from Canada and three countries from Mexico were also submitted, leaving the United States with the bulk of the hosting duty - with 17 cities submitted in the longlist.

Chicago is a notable major American city to have not participated in the bid, with Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel spokesman Matthew McGrath telling PA: "FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk". The US would host 60 of those games, while Canada and Mexico would hold 10 each.

The 2026 World Cup is to be the first to feature 48 teams, compared to the 32 that are to compete in Russian Federation and Qatar.

Canada will host men's World Cup matches for the first time, while Mexico gets its first taste of the event since staging the entire event in 1986.

It's important to note that this was the first World Cup held after World War II. The tournament will still take place over 32 days.

Seven members recused their voting rights - Guam, Kenyan, the US Virgin Islands football associations, and the bidders.

Baltimore and M&T Bank Stadium fared well in FIFA's assessment of potential game venues, and the city is considered the favorite to host the World Cup Team Workshop, which brings together delegations from all 48 competing nations for a pretournament introduction to the World Cup's organization.

Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal are Canadian candidate host cities for the men's soccer showcase, expanded to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament.

Several members of that committee were later banned from the sport after they were caught up in the corruption scandal that engulfed world football's governing body in 2015.

The key number is 104 but there is also the freaky and unprecedented scenario where both bids get rejected.
