Local leaders react to North America’s winning bid for 2026 World Cup

The U.S., Mexico, and Canada had submitted a joint bid to host the World Cup in 2026, when the tournament will expand from 32 teams to 48. Kansas City and Cincinnati are the only candidate cities in the Midwest.

Estimated ticket prices for the potential matches in Kansas City would be $468 for quarter-final games and $609 for the third-place game.

This effort was an enormous priority for former U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati and his successor Carlos Cordeiro and the victorious effort could be an enormous boost to the sport in the United States.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by United States president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet.
