Another lawmaker said foreign fans could bring viruses to the World Cup and infect Russians.

Ahead of the World Cup, in which a million tourists are expected in the country, she claimed many women became pregnant by visitors during the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Russia's head of parliament's committee for families Tamara Pletnyova said on Thursday that when Russian women marry foreigners, the relationships end badly and women are stranded overseas or in Russia but unable to get their children back.

Russia's birth rate hit its lowest level in a decade a year ago despite government efforts to encourage Russians to reverse the demographic trend. "We should have our own babies", Ms Pletnyova said. "I am no nationalist but nevertheless".

"As far as our Russian women are concerned, then I think they can deal with all of their personal issues", he told state news agency Itar-Tass, calling them the "best women in the world" and pointing to the inscription on the World Cup Fan Pass. The poll was conducted among 1,600 respondents in 52 Russian regions between April 20 and April 24.

Degtyaryov spoke after his colleague Tamara Pletnyova suggested that Russian women may end up rearing the fans' children alone. "I hope to God that there would be more love stories, more children, more mixed unions".

"I'd like people in our country to marry for love, no matter what nationality as long as they are Russian citizens who will build a family, live peacefully, have children and raise them". It's lucky if they're the same race (as the mother) but if they're of another race, it's worse, ' the Siberian-born politician said.

Perhaps she was anxious that the women would face a future of single parenthood, but then the lawmaker said that it would be fine if they slept with foreigners who were the same race.
