But he said: "in the end, that doesn't matter".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said yesterday that "sanctions will increase" if talks don't move in the right direction. The summit with Trump will be another way to win over legitimizing political capital - especially if the summit results in the normalization of U.S.

With much of the world focused on the historic summit between the two leaders, Trump also made sure to press his case that his administration had been good for the USA economy. He added he would know within minutes whether Kim was serious about negotiating away his nuclear weapons and has threatened to politely walk out if Kim doesn't meet his expectations. In exchange, Trump agreed to "provide security guarantees" to North Korea.

Trump spoke only briefly in public on Monday, forecasting a "nice" outcome.

Trump will hold a one-on-one meeting with Kim on the resort island of Sentosa, before they are joined by officials and have lunch together, the White House has said. Trump had earlier tweeted about "excitement in the air!" "We're hopeful that we can achieve that in the 2-1/2 years".

The parties briefly salvaged the agreement by providing North Korea with more food and energy aid as well as un-freezing North Korean assets held in Banco Delta Asia. The North Korean leader, in his mid-30s, might not have even looked out of place at Marina Bay Sands had it not been for his distinctive striped Mao suit and his massive security entourage. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake.

Trump has also said he would raise the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea, after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lobbied him in a meeting in Washington last week.

It's important for the game to have a strong Australia side - we're more than happy to shake hands if that creates a different image for people".

The meeting was the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader. But he acknowledged the effort to rid North Korea of its nuclear arsenal was in its early stages. It was an extraordinarily compressed timeline for the landmark summit, one that left aides scrambling to initiate communication with the hermit nation.

As he was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies with his abrasive performance at the G-7.

President Donald Trump is predicting that he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will have "a terrific relationship" as they meet face to face for the first time.

But after a flurry of diplomatic overtures eased tension in recent months, the two leaders are now headed for a history-making handshake that US officials hope could eventually lead to the dismantling of a North Korean nuclear programme that threatens the United States. "We just need the doors to be opened so we can start fresh", he said, telling Cuomo, "it's a great day" and exclaiming: "I'm so happy!" Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo, now secretary of state, secretly met with Kim shortly afterward, setting in motion the sometimes tense negotiations that led to Monday's meeting at the very highest level.

In the same statement, the White House said the talks between United States and North Korean officials were moving "more quickly than expected", though didn't elaborate on what precisely that meant for Trump's stated goal of securing North Korea's complete and verifiable denuclearization.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire U.S. mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there is also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the United States and the North. Most importantly, few believe Kim is actually willing to give up the nuclear weapons that cement his grip on power.

"I can only say this", Pompeo said.
