South Africa 42 England 39

It is England's worst run since 2014 and the pressure is continuing to build after a stunning opening salvo of tries from Mike Brown, Elliot Daly and Owen Farrell was followed by a dramatic collapse, partly induced by the recurring flaw of indiscipline.

With a fifth-place finish in the Six Nations to shake out of their systems, England were at it from the first minute as Wasps' Daly landed a mammoth penalty from inside his own half.

England head coach Jones, who was verbally abused by Springboks fans in the tunnel after the match, said: 'South Africa have used a get out of jail card and sometimes you don't get that again.

And it did not take them long to strike the first hammer blow, with Harlequins' Brown shaking off a couple of challenges to power over in the corner.

Electric debutant S'busiso Nkosi crossed twice to bring Ellis Park to his feet and in between his two tries, Jones hauled off lock Nick Isiekwe, making his full debut, and brought on the uncapped Hurricanes forward Brad Shields. "This game has set the series up fantastically well".

"Maybe I'll have that moment after the last game in Cape Town‚" said the captain.

In a generally positive mood, Jones, the man who lead Japan to a famous World Cup pool stage victory against the Springboks in 2015, highlighted the momentous nature of South Africa's decision to appoint Siya Kolisi as captain.

Kolisi's life journey from poverty and adversity in the township of Zwide in Port Elizabeth to becoming a rugby superstar and iconic figure in the history of South African sport will be inspiration enough for his teammates.

England at least emerged from a pulsating Johannesburg opener without any significant injury concerns, with Tom Curry and Daly suffering minor cramp and a dead leg respectively.

It was asking too much for the second half to match the first and so it proved for quite a while as South Africa camped in the England half but added only a Pollard penalty. "Especially when they win", Jones said after the match.

The dream debut continued when he popped up on the opposite wing after a clever run from Le Roux, creating the space for fellow debutant Aphiwe Dyantyi to send him over.

Rattled South Africa pulled three points back when fly-half Handre Pollard slotted a penalty only for the Red Rose to respond with two more tries.

Onlookers said that Bok fans leaned over railings above the tunnel and shouted insults at the Australian. A bloke said something, so I asked him where I can get a nice bottle of Pinotage and we can have a chat.

"Our replacements all went to the United States of America last week and I expected them to run out of steam a bit after some time, but all of them made a big impact".
