Hosting World Cups and Olympic Games is openly a politicians' prestige-burnishing project now, not only for Russia's president Vladimir Putin or Qatar's Emir, seeking soft power from hosting in 2022.

The soccer showpiece will return to the USA for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow, where the 2018 tournaments starts on Thursday.

North American won a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup bid on Wednesday. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

The United Bid was endorsed by David Beckham and there will be 16 host cities across North America with the U.S. holding ten of the 16, while Mexico and Canada will have three each.

Herdman, meanwhile, says hosting the event will be a "game changer" for Canadian soccer. He said that not only were some of the reforms and rule changes enough to convince the U.S.to bid again, obviously with Canada and Mexico, but it really made the difference in winning, and winning emphatically.

Launched on June 1, 2016, Daily Hive is the evolution of Vancity Buzz and is now in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal.

Further clouding the issue, former U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati - who's still a member of the FIFA Council - told ESPN's Sam Borden on Wednesday that the council will have the final call on automatic bids. Canada's sole World Cup appearance was in 1986 in Mexico, where they did not score a goal, losing to France, Hungry and the Soviet Union in the group stage.

Trudeau on Trump: we support North Korea efforts, won't engage on comments
Trump's attacks arrive as the United States and Canada renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement alongside Mexico. Still, Canada accounts for less than 3 percent of global trade, according to Agri-Food Economic Systems.

Arrowhead has experience with Major League Soccer events, having hosted the Kansas City Wizards - now known as Sporting Kansas City - for 12 years and the U.S. Open Cup Final in 2004.

"It's a watershed moment for our country and for our sport", said Peter Montopoli, general secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association and Canada's bid director.

The World Cup is due to feature 48 teams and will take place across three countries for the first time.

The 2026 World Cup is coming to the United States - and Miami is expected to be one of the venues.

Vancouver dropped out of the World Cup bid in March.

Trump has also backed the tri-nation bid and his administration has given guarantees about trade, tax and other requirements demanded by Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Morocco plans to use 14 stadiums, nine of which have yet to be built with the other five due for renovation. "We are humbled by the trust our colleagues in the FIFA family have put in our bid; strengthened by the unity between our three countries and the CONCACAF region; and excited by the opportunity we have to put football on a new and sustainable path for generations to come".
