Scott Gregory of England plays his second shot from the bunker on the second hole during his horror round at Shinnecock Hills. And for the first time since 2015, the U.S. Open leaderboard includes three-time victor Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods, who is looking for his first major tournament victory in a decade, had 20-1 odds heading into the U.S. Open's first round Thursday.

The 23-year old Englishman finished the windy day with a 22-over 92, becoming the first player to shoot 90 or above at the US Open since Felix Casas did it 16 years ago in his second round at Bethpage Black.

The tough layout and breezy conditions took their toll on the majority of the field, with the high-profile grouping of McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson a combined 25 over par for their first rounds.

No one said this was going to be easy.

Only five players were under par as of Thursday afternoon, as strong winds created hard conditions at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York, which is near the south shore of Long Island. "The issue was I didn't hit it on the short stuff very much".

Gregory, who has no status on any worldwide tour, couldn't recall the last time he had failed to break 90 for 18 holes.

"It's been a long time, and this is not really the week I wanted to revisit that score".
