A gunman who opened fire in what police are calling a "targeted attack" at a newspaper office in Annapolis on Thursday, killing five people in one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in US history, has been identified, multiple law enforcement sources confirm to CNN.

Here's what we know so far about Thursday's attack. Hartley said Ramos had sent her numerous emails in which he called her vulgar names and told her to kill herself. Police said he used a "long-gun" shotgun in the shooting.

The suspected gunman, who authorities have not yet identified, was not cooperating with police investigators.

"And we stand in solidarity with every journalist who fights day in and day out for the truth and for accountability of those in power". Authorities evacuated about 170 people from the building, which is also home to other businesses and doctors' offices, Frashure said.

The suspect in the Maryland newsroom shooting that took the lives of five people allegedly made previous threats to The Capital-Gazette. "It does not appear to be a particularly well-planned operation".

"Devastated & heartbroken. Numb", Gazette editor Jimmy DeButts said on Twitter.

"[It] was like a war zone", Davis said in an interview with the Gazette after the shooting. But he praised his hardworking staff, explaining that they do "more with less" and have "a passion for telling stories from our community". The Capital Gazette building is located on the 800 block of Bestgate Road in Annapolis, Maryland.

Police gave no immediate details on the gunman or his motive in the rampage at The Capital Gazette and said he was being interrogated. He said no gunfire was exchanged between the shooter and police.
