West Nile Virus Reported In Over 20 States In 2018

The most recent infected samples were collected in the City of Harrisburg, Derry Township and Paxtang Borough.

The mosquitoes were recently found in three traps near the intersections of Johnson Street and Avenue 70 and Colfax Street and Avenue 71, according to the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District. In 2017, for example, Cameron County, on the very tip of Texas, reported 14 confirmed cases of Zika Virus, and 26 cases of Zika the year before.

While vector-spraying to reduce mosquito populations is one tool in the public health tool shed, state health officials say it isn't an end-all solution that will solve the problems associated with mosquitoes.

The department on Thursday told the city that collections from Worcester and Auburn carried West Nile Virus. A pool is a group of up to 50 mosquitos of the same species; these are the first pools to test positive in the 2018 surveillance season.

"Mosquitoes thrive in hot, humid weather", said Commissioner Mike Pries.

The department says most people who are bitten do not get sick and the people who do usually suffer a mild flu-like illness.

Check window and door screens to ensure that mosquitoes can not enter your home. Although it may be hard to do when it's hot, wearing long-sleeves, long trousers and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Residents are urged to use insect repellant when outdoors, especially dusk to dawn.

Use EPA-approved insect repellent each time they go outside. People age 50 and older have the highest risk of severe disease.
