Elmira, Ont. couple’s cross-Canada tractor trip cut tragically short in Saskatchewan

A 55-year-old female, identified as Bettina Schuurmans, died as a result of the crash.

The couple was driving a tractor on a summer promotional farm tour for their dairy farm when their vehicle collided with a semi-trailer truck.

SaskMilk, a producer marketing board, confirmed the couple's identity and says family have been notified. He has since been stabilized, according to a spokesperson from Medavie Health Services. The organization said the couple, from Elmira, Ont., was travelling across the country in the John Deere tractor to raise awareness about the dairy industry.

The tour involved talking to consumers about supply management and its benefits for the dairy sector.

"The news of the tragic accident that happened in Saskatchewan yesterday is devastating", said Dairy Farmers of Ontario spokesperson Laural Adams in an email. "Henk and Bettina are not just fellow farmers, but friends, and the loss of Bettina and the injuries to Henk are very painful".

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

A gofundme campaign has been established to help the family with any expenses incurred.
