After a plethora of goals, four UEFA Champions League crowns - including three in a row, completed in Kyiv in May - and nearly too many records to know where to start, Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving the club for Turin.

After the move was confirmed, Ronaldo penned a heartfelt letter to Madrid fans.

"I only have feelings of huge thanks for this club, for the fans and for this city", he said.

The fact he did not enjoy unblighted adoration from the club despite everything he had done for them clearly annoyed Ronaldo, as did the fact that he was not offered new bloated contracts every time he asked for them. "I ask everyone, and especially our followers, to understand that." he added.

The 33-year-old Portugal forward has gone on to become the club's all-time top scorer with 451 goals for Real.

Across 121 years of history, some of world football's finest players have passed through Turin and worn the black and white shirt with such poise and grace that even the five-time Ballon d'Or victor may find himself daunted by the prospect of attempting to emulate the club's most revered names.

The signing also strikes a blow for the profile of Serie A against La Liga, which has now lost two of its three most famous players in the past year after Paris Saint-Germain signed Neymar from Barcelona last August. The 13-time Champions League winners believe the Belgian striker is the one to fill Ronaldo's boots in Madrid next season.

Ronaldo indicated after Madrid won their fourth UEFA Champions League in five years that he was considering leaving the club.

Ronaldo leaves Madrid with the absurd scoring record of 450 goals in 438 games, winning four European Cups and two La Liga titles. I'm for cohabitation. It's too soon to say [whether Ronaldo would make Juve Champions League favourites], but they're in the group of teams that can win it.

He said he had spent nine fantastic years at the Bernabeu. They have been 9 unique years.

"Thank you to everyone and, of course, like I said for the first time in our stadium nine years ago: Hala Madrid!".

"I have thought a lot and I know that the moment has come for a new cycle".

'As Madridistas we'll remember you always.
