Supreme court nominee: Trump to announce Kennedy replacement

The first-term senator was one of just three Democratic Senators who voted to confirm Trump's first Supreme Court selection, Neil Gorsuch, last year.

"Former Sen. Jon Kyl has agreed to serve as the Sherpa for the President's nominee to the Supreme Court", White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said in a statement.

"I appreciate the President inviting me to attend tonight's announcement at the WH", Manchin said in the tweet.

The Trump administration hopes to avoid unexpected future rulings from their Supreme Court picks.

The fact that the president chose another conservative justice is more important than the name of that justice.

"Bob Casey's opposition to President Trump's nominee before he or she has even been named shows he has given up any pretense of being a moderate voice", said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera. "I look forward to conducting a thorough and objective review of Judge Kavanaugh's nomination over the coming weeks".

But lawyers who have worked with Kavanaugh are confident he will be boldly conservative.

Trump called Kavanaugh "one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time", saying he is "considered a judge's judge and a true thought leader among his peers".

Boys Reportedly Now Rescued From Thai Cave Following Second Rescue Operation
Over the next three days, the boys were brought out in groups; four on the first day, four on the second and five on Tuesday. Osotthanakorn said the boys were hungry and asking for a Thai dish of beef with basil and chilli.

President Donald Trump has decided on his Supreme Court nominee, a person with knowledge of the situation revealed Monday, hours before a prime-time TV announcement that will ignite a fierce confirmation battle.

"He's a good man and I like him", Casey said of Hardiman. He's urging people to make their voices heard, an indirect reference to voicing their objections to senators. And then McConnell has said he'd like to see someone confirmed before the court returns in early October.

Senate Republicans hold only a 51-49 majority, leaving them hardly any margin if Democrats hold the line.

Kavanaugh is Trump's second nominee to the high court since he took office in January 2017. Trump made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon (NZ time). He is an evangelical Christian whose book Lead Yourself First uses President Dwight Eisenhower, primatologist Jane Goodall, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr. and others as examples of "leaders who have used solitude to function more effectively". "And so I am pretty, pretty excited", said Cornyn. The others are Republican targets for the confirmation vote who come from Trump-won states where they face re-election this fall. Braun said Monday that the president has chosen another outstanding justice in Kavanaugh. He also praised Kennedy. The framers established that the Constitution is created to secure the blessings of liberty. While that argument won't sway Republicans, their strategy could stiffen Democratic resolve to oppose the nominee.

Trump's nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the D.C. Circuit, and another finalist, Judge Thomas Hardiman of the 3rd Circuit, are also Catholic.

After days of frenzied lobbying and speculation, Trump selected the 53-year-old federal appellate judge for the seat opened up by the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy. Some conservatives have questioned his commitment to social issues like abortion.

Barrett, confirmed to the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on October 31, has faced opposition by abortion rights groups because she has called Roe v. Wade an erroneous decision. Barrett is a former clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia.
