As mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio has frequently shown a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration laws, but he may have taken it a step too far by illegally crossing the U.S. -Mexico border on foot, according to The Associated Press.

The United States Conference of Mayors, including Austin Mayor Adler and several Austin City Council members, gathered In Tornillo, Texas June 21 to visit an immigrant shelter at the Texas border. An NYPD inspector said no, according to the letter, and when the agent asked the group how they arrived, they pointed to Mexico.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is alleging that de Blasio illegally crossed from Mexico into the U.S. while visiting the El Paso, Texas, area in June, an accusation the mayor's office flatly denies.

Following nationwide protests against the Trump administration's "zero tolerance", immigration policy, de Blasio told WNYC radio Brian Lehrer that the agency should be dismantled.

Agents with the Weslaco Station saw a group of people who had previously been unable to enter the US climbing a tree to enter the country through Custom and Border Protection's (CBP) Port of Entry in Progreso, the agency said in a Wednesday news release. "The New York Police Department runs de Blasio's security detail", writes the AP.

The agency alleged that de Blasio and his security detail violated both countries' border laws on June 21 when they illegally crossed into Mexico - and then back into the USA - on foot near the El Paso, Texas, port of entry.

"It's insane", de Blasio told reporters while standing outside the facility's gates.

The spokesperson also said that the mayor had crossed the border to get a better glimpse of the tent city housing the immigrant children, which can only be seen from inside Mexico.

The accusations surrounding Mr de Blasio's border crossing come amidst continued controversy surrounding the almost 3,000 children who have been split from undocumented adults entering the US. "Any suggestion otherwise is a flat-out lie and an obvious attempt by someone to attack the Mayor because of his advocacy for families being ripped apart at the border by the Trump Administration".

"Every country needs reasonable law enforcement on their borders".

The Mayor made headlines in June after calling for the abolishment of ICE.
