Emotions were running high across the nation as Gareth Southgate's squad were edged out by Croatia.

Ultimately accusing them of not showing enough quality, Keane believed the inexperience of their players, and a lack of trophies won by the players in their club careers, told throughout: 'It was a step too far for them'.

Keane, a former Ireland worldwide, tore into the hysteria and took aim at Ian Wright in the ITV studio.

Ahead of the game, Keane was already drawing the ire of English supporters on the "It's Coming Home" bandwagon.

"I made the point a few weeks ago, tongue in cheek, but you have to focus on one game".

The Arsenal legend then decides to joke with his former United rival, appearing to forget his words.

'We wasn't talking about the final, we were just having a laugh with ya. "We were happy! Why can't we get excited?!"

Meeting Putin, Netanyahu says Israel will counter all border violations
Tension has increased at the border as President Bashar al-Assad's forces have pressed towards it with an assault against rebels. Israel, which captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war, has largely stayed out of the current conflict.

"And I was right. You needed a reality check".

What follows is a furious slanging match as a raging Keane takes on the 54-year-old.

The players meet again on Wednesday when Croatia and England clash and, with a place in the World Cup final at stake, there is no better time and chance for Lovren to finally redeem himself.

That caution proved to well founded as Mario Mandzukic's extra-time victor fired Croatia into Sunday's final against France as England's expense in a tense semi-final in Moscow, with Keane biding his time before revisiting his previous discussion with Wright.

And viewers on Twitter were quick to react to the on-air brawl.

One fan appealed to the public to report him missing to Willy Wonka while another claimed to have never seen anybody so orange.

While a third simply said: "Roy Keane vs Ian Wright".
