It allows you to wirelessly output TV audio from Apple TV.

AirPlay 2 on Sonos is now supported on the Sonos One, Play 5, Playbase and Beam speakers.

If you're not an Apple Music user, you'll still likely get some benefit from the AirPlay 2 update.

There are plenty of reasons for investors to be skeptical of Sonos stock, particularly when its devices' access to cloud and streaming services is at the mercy of the company's biggest competitors. But, you can speak to your phone or iPad and tell it to play the music of your choice.

I have tested a beta version of the AirPlay 2 update on a Sonos One and Sonos Beam for the past week, and, generally speaking, it works as expected.

The Apple Home app will respect whatever speaker groupings you've established in the Sonos app, and you can pin those speaker rooms to your favorites pane if you want. Another interesting byproduct of setting up AirPlay 2 support on a Sonos speaker is the ability to use Siri to control Apple Music on Sonos. After that, those four speakers with native AirPlay 2 capabilities should automatically show up in the AirPlay menu on your iPhone or other device. This will enable users to mix and match wireless speakers from different brands and connect them together through Airplay 2. With strong books on one side approaching $1 billion in revenue and on the other, mounting competition from major players, the company decided that now is the sweet spot to go public.

On the Sonos side, both the controller app and the speakers themselves need updates for AirPlay 2 support. Once you've started playing music via AirPlay, you'll see a Started from AirPlay in the Sonos app. Here you'll find a list of your Sonos devices, complete with info such as the IP and MAC addresses of each.

"As such, it is possible that Amazon, which sells products that compete with ours, may on limited notice disable the integration, which would cause our Sonos One or Sonos Beam products to lose their voice-enabled functionality". If you have any other Sonos speaker, and have linked it to a standalone Echo smart speaker using the Sonos skill, you can use Alexa on that in the same way.

You're now all set to use Siri commands to play music on your Sonos speakers!

Future products will also add AirPlay 2 support, giving you the option to play the same song from your iPhone on multiple speakers.

It's not often that a simple software upgrade can improve the prospects of an imminent tech IPO, but that could happen with Sonos, which announced support for Apple's Airplay 2 technology Wednesday.
