Typhoon Maria makes landfall in east China's Fujian

In Fuzhou, the provincial capital, schools and factories in coastal areas were asked to close Wednesday.

Although the typhoon has left Taiwan, the center said rough waves are still expected along Taiwan's northern coast into Wednesday afternoon, and it urged people not to engage in seaside activities. However, the storm weakened as it approached the island and moved past it to the northwest.

A man in New Taipei City died when he fell from the second floor while inspecting his doors and windows early on Wednesday, local media reported.

Taiwan is frequently hit by typhoons during the summer, but it has stepped up preparations to guard against them since Typhoon Morakot devastated the island and killed almost 700 people in 2009, mostly from landslides.

About 43,000 households in Taiwan lost power at the typhoon's peak, and the storm also affected hundreds of flights.

Typhoon Maria made landfall in south-east China's Fujian province Wednesday morning, bringing high waves and heavy rain to several coastal Chinese cities after leaving a trail of destruction in Taiwan.

A year ago more than 100 people were injured when Typhoon Nesat battered the island, causing flooding and widespread power outages.

Typhoon warnings were also issued in Japan's southernmost region Wednesday as the storm passed through Okinawa, but no major damage was reported.

However, Japan has been reeling from its worst weather-related disaster for decades after days of deadly floods and landslides triggered by record rains killed at least 179 in the west of the country.
