Twitter argued that the recent move was aimed at building users' confidence and reflected the fact that follower counts are "a visible feature" on the platform.

This means a lot of people could lose followers.

Singer Katy Perry, whose account is the most-followed on Twitter, lost 1.5 million followers, dropping 1.4 percent to 108.1 million followers, Variety disclosed.

Since Twitter announced that it would be working to reduce questionable accounts, President Trump has lost about 100,000 of his 53.4 million followers, while former president Barack Obama is down nearly 400,000 of his 104 million followers as of Wednesday, according to a report from Washington Post.

Bandai Namco's Code Vein Has Been Delayed Until 2019
The Code Vein delay happened overnight, with only Namco's North American and Asian branches offering statements to fans.

Twitter announced recently that it planned to delete accounts that were created by users but may have been taken over by spammers and bots, or what Twitter calls "locked accounts".

However, Twitter's primary account itself appears to be the biggest loser, Variety reported, losing 7.5 million fake accounts - or 12 percent - from 62.85 million earlier Thursday to 55.35 million by mid-afternoon. Trump remains the 18th most-followed person on Twitter. Twitter said that most users will see a drop of "four followers or fewer".

Twitter also said the purge won't affect the metrics it releases to investors, like monthly active users or daily active users.

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Thursday that Twitter "removed 4,000 of my followers" as the social networking site purged fake accounts - including 300,000 reportedly from President Donald Trump's feed - that were disabled because of suspicious activity. "In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts, and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in". Some celebrities lost the equivalent of a city's or even a small nation's worth of followers in mere minutes. Social media maven Kim Kardashian West lost about 1.5 million followers.
