Sprint downgrades unlimited plan, adds new premium 'Unlimited Plus' offering

Sprint announced two new unlimited data plans this morning called Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Basic. Under this promotional pricing, Unlimited Plus costs $50 a month for a single line, with a second line available for another $30, and lines three through five costing $10 each.

Sprint has joined the bandwagon of carriers redefining what an unlimited data plan should be. Also, you can only stream videos up to 480p and music up to 500kbps.

The first line costs $70 per month with the second tacking on an extra $50. The carriers have been increasingly stretching the definition of an unlimited data plan - once a single, simple all-you-can-eat option - into something with a myriad of different adds-ons from hot spot capability to freebies like Hulu or AT&T Watch.

It's worth noting that Sprint now has a promotional deal in place that could knock the cost of the Plus plan down substantially. However, if customers bring in their own phone or buy a phone outright from Sprint, they can take a $20 per month discount. With this plan, you get all of the premium features you might expect, as you'll be forking over a bit more money on a monthly basis to get them.

A cheaper "unlimited basic" plan, starting at $60 for one line and up to $140 for four lines, slows downloads to 3G speeds after just 500 MB, downgrades streaming to DVD-quality, and offers just a Hulu subscription, but no Tidal account. If customers prefer to lease a device, they get Unlimited Plus at the regular low price of $42 per month per line for five lines.

Unlimited Plus includes: TV you love, with Hulu. In Mexico and Canada, enjoy unlimited talk and text and 10GB of 4G LTE data. Stay connected with 500MB mobile hotspot. Global roaming for text and data is free for 185 destinations - travelers to Canada and Mexico will get unlimited talk, text and data with up to 5GB of LTE speeds.

Unlimited Military: Designed especially for veterans, active duty and reserves of the USA armed forces. The military plan is comparable to the unlimited basic plan but costs only $100 for four lines.

Unlimited Basic will offer users unlimited talk, text and data, but there are speed limits on several data-intensive uses. Good only on July 13.

The only silver lining is the volume pricing: Unlimited Freedom now works out to $36 for five lines, while Unlimited Basic is $32 per line for five lines. "Add all of this up and there's literally never been a better time to switch to Sprint", said Draper. "So, hurry to a Sprint store, these promotions won't be around for long!"
