Chelsea are expected to announce Sarri's appointment on an initial two-year contract imminently - together with the signing of Italy global midfielder Jorginho for a combined fee of €65 million (£57.5m) - after convincing Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis to release the 59-year-old from his contract.

Recall that Conte was sacked after spending two years at the Stamford Bridge.

Friday's Chelsea statement announcing that they had "parted company" with Conte was brief, and without a thank you, but it did highlight what the club had achieved before relations soured.

In Terry's final season at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea sailed to the 2016/17 Premier League title in a convincing fashion in what was a fitting end to the defender's time with his boyhood club.

"We wish Antonio every success in his future career".

That success was helped by prolific striker Diego Costa, who scored 20 goals and provided eight assists.

The off-field controversies bled onto the pitch and the west Londoners flattered to deceive.

Conte spent two seasons in charge of the Premier League club, leading them to the title in his first year. "Great man, Great manager".

Sarri has been favourite to succeed his compatriot after impressing as manager of Serie A side Napoli, who have replaced him with former Chelsea handler Carlo Ancelotti.

The former Empoli boss is not known as a big spender which might fit with the slightly more modern Chelsea era of tighter spending.

The main reason for the prolonged saga has been compensation.

Juventus are ready to offload the Argentina global after signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid and are keen to do business before 23rd July, when Higuain would be due to report for pre-season training. Sarri and Higuain worked together at Napoli. Each of these three players, among others, thrived under the tutelage of Sarri and that will be fascinating for Chelsea fans heading into the new ere.

Russia World Cup star Aleksandr Golovin is another close to arriving from CSKA Moscow, along with Juventus defender Daniele Rugani.
