It's a steep fall-off from there, although 13 networks or services garnered 10 or more nominations, reflecting the breadth of competition that now characterizes the Emmy race in the age of "peak TV". The minority nominations included a historic nod for Sandra Oh, who became the first nominee of Asian descent in the leading actress in a drama series for her role in the BBC America series Killing Eve.

The most star-studded category, as is often the case, was best actor in a limited series or TV movie, where Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Legend and Jeff Daniels all picked up nominations.

HBO's Westworld received 21 nominations, while the seventh season of Game of Thrones received 22 nominations.

We're particularly excited for Coster-Waldau, since this is his first time in Emmy contention.

Last year, FX's "Atlanta" was the lone freshman comedy to break into the series race at the Emmys, while the drama category saw five of its seven nominees be first-timers. He is also nominated for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for "Saturday Night Live". Its absence leaves just one network contender for best comedy, ABC's "black-ish", which also earned nods for Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson, who noted his urban California roots.
