The city's police patrol chief Fred Waller told reporters late on Saturday that the man who was killed was shot after police officers on foot tried to question him because "the bulge around his waistband" suggested he was armed.

The officers who shot Amorosi are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

The protest came amid long-simmering tensions over frequent instances of police shootings and brutality against African-American residents in both Chicago and across the country.

Johnson said that department officials met with the Augustus's family Sunday and showed them the video before making it public. The Washington Post tallies some 548 people who have been shot and killed by police in the United States so far this year - around 20 more than this time last year. Supt. At least one person jumped on a squad auto.

Shortly before 1pm, witnesses reported a barrage of gunshots near the area police were searching. It was not clear if he was going for the weapon. On Sunday, Johnson confirmed that Augustus did not have a hide carry permit.

"Productive citizen, he's not a thug, he's not a gang member, it's shocking", activist William Calloway said.

Baptist minister and civil rights campaigner Jesse Jackson called the shooting a tragedy and said in a statement it was a blessing Mr Augustus did not have his daughter with him at the time. Johnson says police stopped Augustus when an officer noticed a gun in a holster peeking out from under the man's T-shirt.
