The former Le Mans victor managed a scarcely-believable time of 43.86sec aboard the four-wheel drive Volkswagen I.D R Pikes Peak hillclimber, marking the first time an electric auto has claimed the prize.

Leading into this weekend's event, the fastest EV to run up Lord March's driveway was the Lola-Drayson B12 69/EV piloted by Jonny Cocker up the hillclimb in 2013 in a brisk 47.34 seconds.

Having smashed the all-time record at Pikes Peak last month, the I.D. R Pikes Peak is a machine that's absolutely a force to reckon with and with Romain Dumas behind its wheels, there's no stopping it. R and Dumas repeated the feat in the final shootout, managing a 43.86 secs run to make it the first electric vehicle to win the event outright.

Despite an increase in electric/hybrid entrants, the outright record at Goodwood, a 41.6 second post set by the McLaren MP4/13 in 1999, remained safe for another year. Doing so will be exceptionally hard but it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

Second in Sunday's timed shootout at Goodwood was the prodigious road-going Nio EP9 electric racer, which managed a respectable 44.32 second time relying on its mammoth 1014kW outputs, derived from four electric motors.
