Queen Elizabeth II is not the first monarch Colman has played - the first trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos' new film The Favourite arrived last week, starring Colman as an unravelling Queen Anne in the early 18th Century. The first photo from the sets of the series shows Colman sipping a hot cuppa. Picking up roughly where the second season ended, it covers the period of 1964 through the early 1970s.

Colman, seen in the image drinking a cup of tea and eating a slice of marmalade toast, replaces Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II in seasons three and four of the Left Bank Pictures drama.

"I'm so thrilled to be part of The Crown".

Netlix has yet to confirm when season 3 will air, but reports have suggested sometime in 2019.

"I was utterly gripped watching it, a proper "just one more" feeling", the British actress said, according to Netflix. "The only thing I can guarantee is that I'll be shorter than Vanessa", she said.

The 44-year-old actress also quipped, "I'm basically going to rewatch her every episode and copy her!"

Lithgow, who was previously best known for his comedy role in 3rd Rock From The Sun, won an Emmy for his portrayal of the wartime leader in the show's first series. The Crown Season 2 has been nominated in the category of Best Drama as well.
