Mr Trump said he had "low expectations" for his meeting on Monday with Russia's Vladimir Putin, which comes after 12 Russians were indicted for alleged hacking during 2016 United States elections.

Democratic leaders immediately called for Trump to cancel Monday's scheduled meeting with Putin in Helsinki, but the White House said the summit would go ahead.

He said he was going to the meet "with low expectations".

In the interview, Trump also blamed the Democratic National Committee for "allowing themselves to be hacked" by Russians trying to help him win the 2016 election.

"I think that we're being hurt very badly by the rigged witch hunt", Trump told reporters Friday during a press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May". But I certainly, I'll be asking about it.

One senior European official called it "shocking" and another called it "outrageous" to hear a US president compare the relationship with the European Union to that of China and Russian Federation. So having meetings with Russia, China, North Korea, I believe in it. They had bad defenses and they were able to be hacked. It doesn't mean anything.

On Friday, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters pointed out that there was no allegation in the document unveiled by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that any Americans knew they were corresponding with Russians or that any USA citizen had committed a crime.

Mr Trump repeated his previous assertion that the European Union has "really taken advantage of us on trade".

European Council President Donald Tusk, taking the lead on this new interpretation of the EU-U.S. relationship, tweeted Sunday night, "America and the EU are best friends". The indictment said the Russians adopted false online personas to push divisive messages, travelled to the United States to collect intelligence and staged political rallies while posing as Americans.

Trump has been reluctant to criticize Putin over the years and has described him as a competitor in recent days. "I would say, in fact, it strengthens his hand".

"Look at the United States, how the European Union has systematically taken advantage of the USA on trade".

Trump is scheduled to meet Putin in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday. I did it. You got me.' There won't be a Perry Mason here, I don't think.

The indictment says the agents transferred stolen Democratic Party documents to the GRU-leased IL computer in April, 2016.

"We celebrate the Helsinki spirit here. and we welcome everybody who respects human rights and democracy and doesn't share fake news", Helsinki native Timo Heikkinen, 50, said.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton has said both sides have agreed the meeting will have no set agenda.

The US president has reportedly insisted on a one-on-one meeting with Putin, without senior aides present, prompting fears he could give away big concessions - with worldwide implications.

Other documents and emails were made public through a website and Twitter account known as DCLeaks, which the GRU falsely attributed to a group of "American hacktivists".
