Corning said Wednesday that its new screen technology, called Gorilla Glass 6, can survive as many as 15 drops on average without damage compared with 11 for its previous product. Gorilla Glass may not be ideal and does tend to crack when you least expect it, but it's the best in the market and does a good job of protecting a phone against nasty drops that everyone inevitably subjects it to.

Historically, glass has been one of the most fragile components in smartphones and manufacturers have sought to improve durability. With Gorilla Glass 6, the firm makes improvements over Gorilla Glass 5, offering not only the ability to withstand higher drops but also to survive multiple incidents.

"Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5".

With the new Gorilla Glass 6, Corning says that they are delivering the "toughest cover glass available for consumer mobile devices", and that it is their most durable to date.

Corning just unveiled its next-generation Gorilla Glass, developed specifically to be more resistant to drops and scratches. Maybe we can even see it in action with the Google Pixel 3.
