National City will have to make room for some new faces next season.

Overall, the character appears to be a new iteration of DC Comics' Nura Nal, otherwise known as Dream Girl. This season, Nia will follow a similar path as Kara/Supergirl that will lead her to eventually embracing her superhero destiny as Dreamer. "She has this ferocious drive to protect people and to fight against discrimination and hatred and she's the superhero we need right now".

Supergirl introducing Maines' Nia Nal as TV's first transgender superhero sets an incredible precedent and opens the doors for even more positive LGBTQ+ representation on the small screen. "I've just been doing a lot of auditions lately, because a lot of different shows have been really eager to tell the stories of transgender people, especially transgender youth, because it's an important issue right now in our society and in our world". With trans folks we have a lot of people accusing us of just playing dress up for whatever reasons and that's just not true.

'Colony' Has Been Cancelled by USA - There Will Be No Season 4
But there has been no trace of Colony at this year's Comic-Con despite the sci-fi drama now airing its third season. Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal created the series and served as executive producers.

Variety sat down with the trans activist shortly after the news broke to talk about her character Nia Nal aka Dreamer as well as what the TV casting means for the trans community. "I wish there was a trans superhero when I was little". She's a woman who has made her entire career throughout her lifetime in the military, and she operates based on what her commanding officers require and ask of her. David Ajala (Nightflyers, Doctor Who) is also on board, albeit in a recurring role rather than a series regular one, as the devilishly charming and witty Manchester Black, described as the kind of man who can best his enemies in any situation - even when he "brings a knife to a gunfight".

The series stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow "Winn" Schott, Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor, Jess Rath as Brainiac 5, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw/J'onn J'onnz and Sam Witwer as hero Agent Liberty.

The CW has released the season four trailer for Supergirl, which will premiere on October 14 at 8 PM ET.
