The CW's Supergirl has cast transgender activist Nicole Maines as television's first trans superhero, in a role that appears to introduce another member of DC's Legion of Super-Heroes to the drama. Most notably, the CW series will debut TV's first transgender superhero, Dreamer. The news was revealed during the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.

Nicole will play Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, "the newest addition to the CatCo reporting team".

Reports of the search for an actor to portray a transgender character broke in May, but now word has emerged that Maines has been cast as Nia Nal, a hero named "The Dreamer".

Supergirl will also add April Parker Jones as series regular Colonel Haley and David Ajala in the recurring role of Manchester Black. Over the course of the season, Nal will be coming into her own as a superhero. Fans may know Maines from shows like Royal Pains and The Trans List.

Based on the iconic DC character, Manchester Black (Ajala) is the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the victor.
