"BE CAUTIOUS!" Trump wrote at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that Trump's hostile policies toward Tehran could lead to "the mother of all wars", according to a report by state new agency IRNA.

In a televised speech, Hassan Rouhani told the American president: "Do not play with the lion's tail, you will regret it forever". Any details of that plan remain to be seen, other than the economic sanctions the U.S.is set to reimpose after leaving the Iran nuclear deal.

Also Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's "tough stand" against Iran after the United States leader issued a stark warning to the Islamic Republic.

Tension between the USA and Iran has been high ever since Trump pulled out of the United States' 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

In his address to reporters on Sunday, Rouhani also held out the option of peace with the US, state media reported.

Pompeo accuses Iranian Supreme Leader of profiting from $95 billion hedge fund

Tensions between the USA and Iran have been mounting since Trump took office. Pompeo talked about increasing the media outreach to the Iranian people.

Iran's oil exports could fall by as much as two-thirds by the end of the year because of new USA sanctions, putting oil markets under huge strain amid supply outages elsewhere. After his two-day visit, Pompeo said he had substantive discussions on next steps toward the North's denuclearization, but the North's Foreign Ministry accused the United States of making "gangster-like" demands for its unilateral disarmament.

"I would like to praise the tough stand expressed yesterday by President Trump and Secretary of State (Mike) Pompeo against the aggression of the Iranian regime", Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting. Washington is now re-instating the sanctions, despite complaints from the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany, who all signed the 2015 pact. Pompeo promised U.S. aid to Iranians who would rise up against their government officials, whom he said were "merely polished front men for the ayatollahs' global con artistry".

The US secretary of state added: "While it is ultimately up to the Iranian people to determine the direction of their country, the United States. will support the long-ignored voice of the Iranian people".

Washington has long called Iran the world's leading "state sponsor of terrorism" because Tehran arms and funds proxy armed groups like the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
