Moscow made the offer - which would see Iranian forces stay 100 kilometres (62 miles) from Syria's border with the Golan - during talks Monday in Jerusalem between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the official said.

The condition of the pilot and crew are unknown.

Today's incident comes a day after Israel's air defences fired at Syrian rockets it feared could hit its territory.

The system was activated when two Syrian surface-to-surface missiles seemed to approach Israeli airspace.

@IDFSpokesperson tweeted: "Two Patriot missiles were launched at a Syrian Sukhoi fighter jet that infiltrated about 1 mile into Israeli airspace". At the time, the plane was intercepted by a Patriot missile some 800 meters west of the Israel-Syria border.

Flight safety and risk mitigation is why we conduct such rigorous testing and anomalies are a natural part of any test program. The test is meant to demonstrate the vehicle's ability to fly away from a failing rocket and parachute to safety.

Israel's military said there had been an increase in internal fighting in Syria since the morning hours, including intensified activity by the Syrian Air Force.

As a condition of accepting the return of the Syrian army to the border region, Netanyahu said Israel is demanding strict adherence to a 1974 disengagement deal that created a buffer zone patrolled by United Nations forces between Syria and Israel. The other time was in 2014, when it shot down a Sukhoi-24 that entered Israeli airspace over the Golan Heights.

"Additional sirens are now sounding in several locations in northern Israel". When Israeli sensors realised they would land on the Syrian side, David's Sling was given an abort order for the interceptors to self-destruct in mid-air. "No injuries or damage reported".

"A short while ago, a terrorist squad was launching arson balloons from the northern Gaza Strip into Israeli territory".
