What is Trump’s proposed U.S. Space Force?

The debate is over.

President Trump's tweet about Space Force looks good as a motto over a NASA image of Earth and the moon.

Today (Aug. 9), Vice President Mike Pence unveiled a detailed plan for the military Space Force proposed by President Donald Trump in a speech at the Pentagon. "Space is essential to the nation's security and prosperity".

"Both nations are also investing heavily in what are known as hypersonic missiles created to fly up to 5 miles per second at such low altitudes that they could potentially evade detection by our missile defense radars", Pence said.

Given the stakes surrounding building a new branch of the military, the issue is likely to be a political football.

In just two years the United States plans to have a new military programme geared towards space.

Mr. Mattis added that he's been in close consultation with Mr. Pence, who heads the White House's National Space Council, and other top administration officials.

Tens of thousands of Druze and their supporters rallied in central Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest against the legislation. The wave of criticism piles pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is already beset by corruption allegations.

Ultimately, Congress must establish the new department, the vice president said. The Air Force now oversees some of the most critical space-based capabilities.

These developments come some seven weeks after President Donald Trump announced his plan to create a dedicated service branch for space, ordering the Pentagon to begin planning for a space force. "This report reviews the national security space activities within the Department of Defense, and it identifies concrete steps that our administration will take to lay the foundation for a new department of the Space Force". Although Democrats have supported the idea in the past, some may withdraw support depending on the outcome of the mid-term election in November.

Without any new legislation and using existing authorities, DoD will establish several of the component parts of the Space Force.

The U.S. already has a space-based military footprint.

Congress' most ardent proponents of a separate service for space commended Pence's remarks.

"Russia has been designing an airborne laser to disrupt our space based system and it claims to be developing missiles that can be launched from an aircraft mid flight to destroy American satellites". "But we built that architecture in space at a time when it was benign". The first step would be to create a US Space Command by the end of the year, a new combatant command that would have dedicated resources, be led by a four-star general, and be tasked with defending space, the way the Pentagon's Pacific Command oversees the ocean.
